Year 2 Trip to The Natural History Museum
8 April 2026On 23rd January 2026, Year 2 enjoyed an exciting and enriching trip to the wonderful museums in Oxford — the Oxford University Museum of Natural History and the Pitt Rivers Museum.
The day was packed with discovery, exploration and hands-on learning. During a museum-led workshop on insects and their habitats, the children had the incredible opportunity to handle live hissing cockroaches, observe amazing leaf-shaped grasshoppers and examine a fascinating variety of insect specimens up close. It was a fantastic way to bring their Science learning to life, reinforcing last term’s work on habitats and helping the children deepen their understanding of how different creatures survive and thrive in their environments.
Beyond the workshop, the children took part in self-guided explorations around both museums. Linking beautifully with their History focus on explorers, the children became explorers themselves for the day — searching the exhibits for connections to their classroom learning and discovering areas of shared study across the two museums. They showed great curiosity, enthusiasm and thoughtful discussion as they made links between artefacts, natural specimens and their own knowledge.
Of course, no school trip would be complete without the excitement of the coach journey and a well-earned lunch together, both of which were thoroughly enjoyed!
A huge thank you goes to our wonderful parent helpers who accompanied the trip. Your support made the day possible and ensured it was a safe, smooth and memorable experience for all.
Year 2 returned to school inspired, full of stories and buzzing with new knowledge — what a fantastic day of learning!
