Our History

Since its inception, John Hampden Primary School has built a reputation as a friendly and caring place, committed to excellence in learning. Formally known as The Thame Royal British Schools and Park Street School, the oldest part of the school was built in 1837. In 1907, the school was renamed after John Hampden, honouring a local Parliamentarian and statesman helped lay the cornerstone of modern parliamentary democracy. The current school uniform pays tribute to the colours of his famous Civil War regiment of ‘Greencoats’.

John Hampden continued to flourish, becoming a Junior and Infant school in 1929 and in 1947 becoming a county-controlled establishment. In September 2009, a federation was formed between John Hampden Primary School and Tetsworth Primary School.

John Hampden School has adapted to changes in education over time but kept the highest values at its core. It has a proud and historic reputation for being a school at the heart of Thame Community; being highly visible at town events and praised for its openness and family feel. The school’s commitment to academic excellence and aspiration is balanced with opportunities beyond the classroom. Child centered learning means that the school provides experiences through a broad and varied curriculum – one that inspires and excites the next generation.
