Pupil Leadership
Pupil Leadership at John Hampden Primary School
Empowering pupils through leadership opportunities and encouraging their voices are crucial elements in fostering a positive and inclusive school environment. We want the pupils of John Hampden Primary School to build confidence and skills in expressing views and voicing opinions but also contribute to a sense of ownership and responsibility within the school community.
Providing leadership roles to students helps them develop essential skills such as decision-making, teamwork, and communication. At John Hampden Primary School this includes roles like School Council, Eco-Council, Makaton Signing Ambassadors, Digital Leaders, House Captains, Sports Ambassadors and Wellbeing Ambassadors. These positions allow pupils to take on responsibilities, lead initiatives, and represent their peers. By participating in leadership activities, students learn to collaborate, solve problems, and make informed decisions, which are valuable skills for their future.
Whether they are leaders or not, we encourage pupil voice through class and buddy councils as a means of actively listening to and valuing students’ opinions and ideas. We believe that involving our pupils in decision-making processes, such as planning school events or developing school policies, fosters a sense of belonging and respect. When pupils feel heard and valued, they are more likely to engage positively with their education and school community. Additionally, these practices prepare students for future roles in society by developing their leadership and civic engagement skills. By prioritising pupil leadership and voice, John Hampden School creates an empowering environment that nurtures confident, responsible, and active learners.
